On Tuesday, March 15th St. Manchan's N.S remembered the 1916 Rising with a flag raising ceremony. Our school caretaker, Mr Ray Bohan, raised the flag presented to the school by the Irish Army last November. Our Principal, Ms. Cahill welcomed everyone to the ceremony followed by a recitation of the poem "I see his blood upon the rose" by Dáire Heslin. The chairperson of our Board of Management, Mr Enda Stenson, spoke about the 1916 rising and read the proclamation with Chloe Harkin. James Foy then read the new proclamation that he himself had written and all the pupils recited the poem "Mise Eire" . The Junior Classes sang "Easter 1916". This was followed by the school choir singing "The Minstrel Boy" and "Ó ró sé do bheatha abhaile". The pupils of 3rd class then performed a short play in the GP room remembering all involved in the Rising. All classes have been learning about the Easter Rising and have beautiful displays of Art and writing throughout the school.
On March 16th our Green Schools Committee held a No Uniform Day. Pupils and staff had the option of wearing green to celebrate St. Patricks Day or clothing similar to that worn in 1916. A grand total of 296 euro was raised on the day. Well done everyone.
